The Fun and Vibrant Playa Zicatela in Oaxaca
Welcome to Playa Zicatela, where massive world-class waves meet a buzzing nightlife.
Known as the “Mexican Pipeline” of Puerto Escondido, this 3 km stretch is lined with beach bars, open-air restaurants, and endless sandy spots to lounge by day and party by night.
Why Visit?
Beachfront Eats & Drinks
The entire strip of beach is lined with a variety of open beachfront restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and clubs.
From fresh seafood to $3 buckets of beer, there’s no shortage of places to snack and hammock-watch the waves.
We discovered that La Punta offered better food options while Zicatela was more “touristy”. That being said, La Mariinera was a delicious spot where we celebrated our American Thanksgiving dinner together.
Surfing Legend
Playa Zicatela is a world-class surfing destination known for massive barreling waves – hosting several international surf competitions throughout the year, including the popular Zicatela Pro.
Throughout the year, Zicatela commonly has large swells that are too advanced for beginners. Taking lessons in La Punta is more advised for beginners to intermediate level surfers.
Definitely one of the largest waves I have ever seen and heard in my life!
Sunsets to Die For
The sunsets on Playa Zicatela are spectacularly vibrant and warm.
The whole beach glows red-orange almost every evening.
Locals and tourists all gather along the coastline of Zicatela to witness the sunset as the evening hits. It seemed to be an evening ritual as the community gathers along the sand before the evening falls.
Lively Nightlife
There’s never a dull evening in Zicatela.
We stopped at bars that offered games of pool, music and dart tournaments. This was one of our favorite nights in Puerto Escondido. – and it’s all here until the early morning.
Keep in mind if you plan on staying in town. For noise concerns, consider renting an airbnb or hotel reservation in La Punta, just minutes away but easily much quieter at night.
Most of the restaurants that are open during the day, turn into party hubs in the evening.
Taxi’s are all along the main street so getting access back to your housing shouldn’t be an issue.
Lazy Daytime
Residing along a beach, you can find countless hammocks, lounge chairs and sandy real estate to lounge out in the sun or shady palapa.
There’s a bustling energy near the street but the beachfront promenade is lined with vendors, shops, bars and restaurants.
It’s exceptionally relaxing to order something to eat with a cocktail in hand. There were no vendors walking along the strip, as most of the shops outside of the restaurants were filled with shoppers.
Grocery stores, currency vendors, tattoo parlors and tourist shops are to name a few.
If looking for something more quieter, calmer and safe swim access, try Playa Carrizalillo or Playa Manzanillo & Angelito. Both beaches offer safer waters for swimming, snorkeling and overall calmer atmosphere.
Where to Stay
The area around Playa Zicatela offers a range of accommodations from budget-friendly hostels to upscale airbnbs.
Many of these accommodations have ocean views or rooftops overlooking the town.
Zicatela is a perfect spot if you’re looking to stay close to the main center of Puerto Escondido. If sound is a concern, I’d recommend staying in or closer to La Punta.
My Verdict
Playa Zicatela is a high-energy, high-vibe spot that’s perfect for surfers, social butterflies, and anyone who loves a good beach party.
I personally preferred La Punta for it’s food, but Zicatela’s atmosphere, sunsets, and sheer energy made it one of my favorite nights out in Puerto Escondido.
Not for the early-to-bed type, but 100% worth experiencing.
