Why Try It?

  1. Scenic Variety – Ride through palm-lined jungle trails, cross rivers by boat, and finish with a gallop along an untouched stretch of beach.
  2. Sunset Magic – Watch the sky explode into shades of orange and pink over the Pacific Ocean.
  3. Local Connection – Most tours are run by small, family-owned companies, giving you a more personal and authentic experience.

Our Experience

We stumbled upon a small tour shop while wandering the streets of Puerto Escondido (el centro) and decided to go for it – no overthinking, no pre-booking. Best decision ever.

The ride took us through tropical landscapes before our horses were led onto a small boat to cross the river.

We then galloped down an empty beach as the eaves crashed beside us, ending the evening with a cold beer in hand while watching the sun dip below the horizon.

On the way back, fireflies lit up the jungle – thousands of tiny lights dancing around us in the dark.

What to Wear & Bring

  • Long pants or jeans (to avoid chafing)
  • Closed-toed shoes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Bug spray (trust me – especially at dusk!)
  • A small bottle of water

Horseback Riding Etiquette

Most trail horses are older, calmer, and well-trained – perfect for beginners.

Follow your guide’s instructions for your safety and stay relaxed if your horse gets jumpy. Your guide will help.

Trying learning a few basic Spanish commands as it should make your ride smoother. But when in doubt, a simple “whoa” should always work.

My Verdict

Horseback riding in Puerto Escondido is pure magic.

It’s not just about the ride – it’s the river crossing, the salty air, the open beach, and that unbeatable sunset glow.

Even if you’ve never been on a horse before, this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that you just can’t recreate.
