What to Pack for a Week in Mexico
Heading to Mexico for a week? No matter Pacific or Atlantic facing, city exploring or waterfall chasing, packing smart is key.
Here’s everything I wish I knew before my first trip (plus a few things I’ll never travel without now).
Clothing Essentials
- Lightweight layers – Mexico’s climate can vary more than you think. Days can be hot and sunny, nights coolers, especially in the mountain towns.
- Swimwear – Bring at least two so one can dry while you’re wearing the other.
- Cover-up or sarong – Perfect for beach days or as a quick layer when visiting more modest areas.
- Comfortable walking shoes – For city exploring or light hikes.
- Sandals or flip-flops – Easy for beach and pool days.
- Long-sleeve rash guard – A great addition for swimming in the ocean as jelly fish are common.
Sun & Bug Protection
- High SPF sunscreen – Reef-safe if you’re going to be in the ocean.
- Sunglasses & wide-brim hat – The sun is strong.
- Bug spray – Especially important in tropical or jungle regions.
- Aloe vera gel – Just in case you forget to reapply sunscreen (we’ve all been there).
Extras for Adventure
- Reusable water bottle – Another option is to bring a filtered water bottle for extra protection from unhealthy drinking waters.
- Small daypack – For day trips, bikes and beach gear.
- Waterproof phone case or dry bag – For beach and boat days.
- Beach Bag – Something large to cary around all your beach towels, water bottles and snacks.
- GoPro Waterproof Camera – The best way to capture the memories both on land and in water.
- Snorkel gear – Optional, but great for avoiding rental fees if you’re doing multiple snorkel trips.
Important Documents & Safety Items
- Passport + photocopies – Keep a copy separate from the original.
- Travel insurance – Peace of mind for health and trip protection.
- Small cash in pesos – Many local spots don’t take cards.
- Credit/debit card with no foreign transaction fees – Saves money over the week.
Insider Tips
- Pack light – Laundry services in Mexico are quick and inexpensive.
- Bring a sweater/light jacket – Even beach towns can have cool evenings. Plus it’s a great way to eliminate mosquito bites.
- Don’t forget meds – Bring your own paint relievers, stomach medicine, or allergy pills.
- A Spanish phrasebook or app – Helpful for taxis, markets, and restaurants outside tourist zones.
A week in Mexico doesn’t require a huge suitcase – just the right mix of sun protection, versatile clothing, and adventure gear.
The lighter you pack, the easier it’ll be to hop between beaches, cities, and mountains without feeling weighted down.
Plus, you’ll have room for souvenirs (and trust me, you’ll want them).
