Playa Carrizalillo – Puerto Escondido’s Turquoise Oasis
Tucked into a secluded bay, framed by lush green cliffs, and shimmering with water so blue it almost looks fake – this is the beach that makes you stop mid-step and say, “Whoa.”
But here’s the real beauty of Carrizalillo: it’s not just a pretty face.
The calm waters, vibrant marine life, and cozy beach vibe make it one of the most enjoyable (and swimmable) spots in town.
Whether you want to snorkel with sea turtles, paddle along the shore, or just sink into a lounge chair with a cold drink, this little cove delivers it all.
Why Carrizalillo Is So Special
While Zicatela roars with pro surfers and pounding waves, Carrizalillo mesmerizes in oasis-like luxury.
It’s protected from heavy currents, which means the bay stays calm enough for kids, casual swimmers, and beginners trying their first surf lesson.
The cliffs surrounding the beach give it a hidden-away feel – like you’ve stumbled onto your own tropical secret.
Playa Carrizalillo Beach Guide:
Swimming and Snorkeling
Playa Carrizalillo is a dream for water lovers.
The turquoise water is usually calm, making it perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, and snorkeling.
You’ll find gear rentals right on the sand, so no need to lug your own.Â
Marine Life
Reef fish dart between rocks, and sea turtles are regular visitors – sometimes gliding right under your board while you surf or paddle.
The best sightings happen in calm conditions, so keep in mind that winter swells can make snorkeling more challenging.
Lounging & Amenities
Rent a lounge chair from the beach café and you’ll have access to fresh seafood, Mexican classics, and cocktails without ever leaving the sand.
This isn’t a loud part beach – it’s laid-back, family-friendly, and easy to spend the entire afternoon just soaking it in.
This beach is also a popular spot to watch the sunset, and the views over the ocean from the top of the steps can be quite spectacular.
Accessibility
Playa Carrizalillo is fairly close to the Centre of Puerto Escondido. The best way to get there is by taxi.
Once there, you do need to descend a long set of stairs.
The journey down the stairs can be steep and long but it is definitely worth the beach access.
My Verdict
Playa Carrizalillo is a must-visit if you’re in Puerto Escondido.Â
It’s picture-perfect, peaceful, and exceeded all of our expectations. Pictures can’t really capture it’s beauty.
This beach will win you over with it’s crystal blue waters and soft sandy beach. An amazing place to even just take a peek at from the top of the stairs.Â
