Humboldt Redwoods State Park Guide: Best Things to Do

Tucked along the coastline, Humboldt Redwoods State Park is a place where you can be staring out at the sea cliffs one minute, then deep inside a cathedral of ancient redwoods the next.

I stumbled into this park almost accidentally, after a leisurely day in Mendocino.

We decided to keep driving north along Highway 1, chasing “just one more” scenic view… and before we knew it, the road narrowed, the light dimmed, and we were swallowed up by a massive forest.

Road-Trip to Mendocino CA and Humboldt National Forest

#1: The Famous Avenue of the Giants

This scenic stretch of road snakes through groves and groves of towering trees.

These aren’t just tall trees. They’re skyscrapers rooted in moss.

And the further you drive along the Avenue of the Giants, the larger and larger the trees become (reaching heights over 350 feet!).

Pro tip: Don’t just drive straight through. Pull over. Step out. Stand beside one of these giants and take a picture – not because Instagram needs it, but because you do.

It’s humbling to see yourself look ant-sized next to something that’s been alive since before the Roman Empire fell.

#2: Hiking

If you prefer to explore on foot, that park’s trails range from easy strolls to advanced hikes.

Two classics:

  • Rounders Grover Nature Trail (Easy): A short, scenic walk perfect for getting up close with the biggest trees without committing to a long trek.
  • Rockefeller Loop Trail (Intermediate): A peaceful loop through some of the most impressive groves in the park.

Just keep in mind – the season matters.

I visited in November, which meant moody skies and spurts of rain. It was atmospheric, but also muddy and chilly. If you want sunny hikes, aim for summer.

Something funny you might notice along the sides of the roads are multiple ‘Bigfoot’ souvenir stands.

Locals try to sell many of these trinkets because apparently there have been a few historical Bigfoot sightings in the area.

We didn’t learn this until we made our way back from the park.

#3: Visit Mendocino

Mendocino is a small town along the coast of Northern California. It’s a charming and beautiful escape from the large city energy, which makes this town absolutely adorable.

It’s peaceful yet full of surprises. Just along the cliffs, my cousin and I spontaneously witnessed 2 whales breaching along the coast. They were right there and we had no idea that such a natural surprise could ever occur – in our lives. A memory we both will never forget.

The Verdict

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is one of those places that humbles you without trying.

It’s not buzzing with tourists like Yosemite or crowded with influencers like Big Sur.

It’s quieter, more mysterious – the kind of beauty that doesn’t need hype because it’s been here for millennia.

Is it worth visiting? Absolutely – but only if you’re willing to slow down.

This isn’t a “check it off the list” stop. It’s a place to wander, to pull over because you want to stop and breathe in air that smells like rain and earth

If you’re in Northern California and want to see a side of the state that still feels wild and untouched, Humboldt Redwoods delivers. Just… keep an eye out for Bigfoot.
