Mammoth Mountain Skiing Guide for Beginners
One of the most popular winter sports destinations in California, Mammoth Mountain is an amazing and adventurous mountain that’s perfect to visit in the winter and springs months.
But don’t let the experienced and local ski goers to intimidate you from jumping in on the fun.
I was a total newbie when I first went – having to learn how to ski down an intermediate level slope on my first go. And without ever having put skis on in my life, I magically made it down the mountain unscaved.
But in short, I had to quickly learn some valuable lessons that day.
Here’s an easy beginners guide to help you make the most of your first skiing adventure in Mammoth –
Know Before You Go
Gear Up
Once in town, rent or purchase ski gear, including skis, boots, poles, helmet and appropriate clothing.
Consider a pair of sunglasses or snow goggles as the bright, white snow and cold wind in your face can be bothersome.
Alternatively, begin looking for second hand items at thrift stores before your trip. Reach out to friends or family who casually ski is helpful as well.
Lessons
Consider booking ski lessons with a reputable ski school to learn the basics from professional instructors.
I never got this experience unfortunately but I really wish I did. It’s not worth the stress, anxiety, danger and frankly, embarrassment of not abiding to the mountain etiquette. Professional guides can assist in helping you learn the safest way to practice your new hobby.
Weather Check
Check the weather forecast and be prepared for any changing conditions.
When the mountain is “icy”, it will make skiing for beginners much more difficult and dangerous. It’s exactly how it sounds, like sliding down sheets of icy – no fun.
Learn the Skiing Basics
Posture and Balance
Keep a balanced stance along with knees slightly bent, body weight centered and hands facing forward.
Your boots should be tight with only a slight bend in the toes.
Turning
Practice making wide, controlled turns by shifting your weight and using the edges of the ski.
Skiing poles will help maintain your balance and initiate turns.
You can keep your legs slightly bent inwards making a “pizza” shape to help slow your spend down and you make each turn.
Stopping
“Pizza” will also help you make complete stops when you are first learning. Just form a “V” shape with your skis wheres parallel skis increase your speed.
Chairlift Etiquette
Prepare to enter and exit the chairlift on time. It is especially important to not hang around the exit of the chair lift, as the next set of skiers or snowboarders will be ready to exit immediately after you.
And trust me, they will not wait for you to move either.
Remain still and pause as the chair lift comes up from behind you. Bend your knees and allow the chair to simply lift you up and forward onto the lift.
Attempting the Beginner Slopes
Discovery Chair (Chair 11)
A perfect and gentle beginner terrain with wide-open runs that are ideal for practicing turns and especially great for building confidence.
Schoolyard Express (Chair 17)
Another great option for beginners, offering wide and gentle slopes and easy access to the ski school.
Eagle Express (Chair 15)
Provides access to beginner and intermediate terrain, including some larger runs suitable for progressing skills.

Safety Tips
Stay on Designated Trails
It’s important to stick to the beginner slopes and marked trails suitable for your skill level. However don’t be afraid to try an intermediate slope if you feel prepared and ready.
Obey Signs and Instructions
Follow all posted signs, warnings, and instructions from ski patrol and resort staff.
Unwillingness to do so, and the ski patrol will inform you otherwise!
Know Your Limits
Ski within your ability level and take breaks when needed to prevent fatigue. Do not stop in the middle of slope. While you may feel safe, other skiers on beginner slopes may not be able to avoid you.
Buddy System
Lastly, I recommend to ski with a friend or family member, especially when you are new to the sport.
Besides, it’s always better – and more fun – to travel in packs.
Apres-Ski Activities
Après-ski is a French term that translates literally to “after ski” or “after skiing.”
Dining and Shopping
Explore the popular Village at Mammoth for a variety of dining options, live music, shops, and other après-ski activities. Additionally, visit Mammoth Brew Co. for some delicious food, beer and seltzers. (Distant Brewing is also another yummy spot!)
Relaxation
As soon as the soreness kicks in, unwind and relax at one of the many resort spas in town. Or more conveniently, decompress at your hotels’ hot tubs after a day on the slopes.
Scenic Gondola Rides
The scenic gondola ride is an exciting way to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Sierra mountains. What’s more is that there’s even a cafe Eleven53 Café at the top of the mountain.
Additional Tips
Hydration and Nutrition
First and foremost, stay hydrated and fuel your body with snacks to maintain energy throughout the day. I like to bring some kind of light snack or particular energy bar with me throughout the day.
Rest and Recovery
Get plenty of rest to recover from each day of skiing and minimize the risk of injury. Stretching before going up and down the slopes all day is a life savor for your muscles.
Wear Sunscreen
Without a doubt, sunscreen is an absolute requirement. Wear it on your face to prevent sun damage around your goggles. It should be noted that a sunburn isn’t only a possibility in warmer weather.
Enjoy the Experience
Lastly, embrace the learning process. Enjoy the stunning mountain scenery, and have fun on the slopes!
Don’t let the Crowd Intimidate you
Without a doubt I absolutely love the mountains, and enjoy spending my free time discovering the many regions of California.
But skiing was one of those activities that felt unattainable. The culture seemed exclusive, the cost seemed outrageous, and the location just seemed too far.
But with a generous opportunity from a friend, it was finally my time to give it a go.
And wow was it fun. Challenging, stressful, scary… but loads of fun.
Above all the challenges and learning curves, I encourage you all to take the opportunity when it comes to trying this sport. Whereas some destinations are more relaxing, I found this destination to be a combination of both adventure and accomplishment.
Mammoth is an amazing place full of excitement and ambition. I hope you take the opportunity and plan a trip here, and make the most of this special place.
