Best Things to Do in Mendocino, California (Complete Travel Guide)
If you’re craving a vacation that doesn’t involve elbowing your way through tight crowds or waiting one hour for an overpriced latte, then let me tell you about the most adorable, peaceful and quaint little town of Mendocino.
It’s a small coastal town that’s laid-back, full of nature, and guaranteed to offer the most relaxing getaway you didn’t know you needed.
The Scenic Drive
Mendocino is about a 3.5 hour scenic drive from San Francisco, CA.
Think vineyards, towering redwoods, and the kind of ocean views that make you want to pull over every five minutes for just one more picture. Spoiler, it’s never just one.
Mendocino’s coast is part of the California Lost Coast, named because it’s so rugged that they literally couldn’t build the highway all the way through.
This is why Mendocino is so remote, but that’s part of the magic.
A Cozy Town to Explore
Once you roll into Mendocino, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped onto a movie set. And actually, you have.
Mendocino often doubles as a quaint east coast town in Hollywood movies (remember “Murder, She Wrote“?). With its Victorian houses and flower-filled gardens, every corner is charming without needing to try too hard.
The town has been around since the 1850s, originally built as a logging settlement. Mendocino has now encapsulated that “small town but artsy” vibe.
With art galleries, cute boutiques and no big chains in sight, it’s one of the most pleasant and refreshing towns in California. Forget Starbucks, you’re a local now!
Ocean, Cliffs & Wildlife
Now for the main event… Mendocino Headlands State Park.
It’s basically the town’s backyard and where you’ll find some of the most beautiful ocean views and wildlife.
Cliffs straight out of a painting, waves crashing dramatically below, whales spouting off in the distance and enough photo ops to make your phone storage panic.
In the winter, keep an eye out for migrating gray whales because yes, Mendocino comes with free whale-watching. Something you would expect to pay hundreds of dollars for in any other town – plus you don’t have to worry about getting sea sick!
We witnessed a mother and her calf breaching very close to the cliffs when we were there. One of the most epic experiences I’ve ever seen.
But if you can’t find any whales, rest assured, there’s a blowhole in the park that creates a mini ocean geyser when the tide is just right.
Pro tip: bring your hiking boots. The trails here are easy but it’s no use when the misty fog rolls in and your shoes start to get muddy.
Forest Waterfalls & Kayaking
If you’re feeling outdoorsy (or at least want to pretend), head over to Russian Gulch State Park.
There’s a 36-foot waterfall hidden in a fern-covered canyon that’s straight out of a fairytale.
The hike to the falls is an easy 3-mile loop. Which means you’ll work up just enough of a sweat to go back into town for some more exploring if interested.
Looking for more of a water adventure? Head to Big River and rent a kayak or canoe. Paddling up the river, surrounded by redwoods, with nothing but the sound of birds chirping – it’s like nature’s version of a spa day.
Food & Wine
For a tiny town, Mendocino takes its food game seriously.
Local restaurants are all about the farm-to-table. So in other words, your meal was definitely just growing in a garden down the road an hour ago.
For an unforgettable dining experience, head to Cafe Beaujolais for a wood-fired pizza, or hit up Trillium Cafe for a meal and ocean views.
Did I mention the WINE? Mendocino County is home to some of the best wines in the entire U.S. especially for Pinot Noir lovers.
Spend an afternoon wine tasting and you’ll soon be channeling your inner sommelier.
Interesting fact: The first organic winery in the U.S. started in Mendocino County.
Where to Stay
If you love bed and breakfast, then you’re in luck because Mendocino has plenty of charming options to choose from.
An obvious standout is The Stanford Inn by the Sea.
It’s a stunning eco-resort that’s perched on a bluff. You’ll get ocean views, cozy fireplaces, and plenty of relaxation.
If you’re looking for more nature, then there are campgrounds nearby. Fall asleep to the sounds of waves crashing and wake up to the smell of last night’s campfire.
Unplug & Savor Every Second
Mendocino isn’t the place to rush through.
It’s the kind of town where you slow down, savor every sip of wine, and spend an hour watching the sunset just because you can.
You won’t find big crowds or flashy tourist traps here – just peaceful, unspoiled beauty at every turn.
Whether you’re hiking, trying local wine, or just soaking in the ocean breeze, Mendocino makes it impossible not to chill.
So, pack you comfiest sweater, grab your camera, and be prepared to be charmed!
Trust me, after a few days in Mendocino, you’ll be asking yourself, “Why didn’t I do this more often?”.
