Best Things to Do in Santa Barbara

Day 1: Arrival, The Funk Zone, and Romantic Dinner

Morning:

Start with brunch at Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery or Scarlett Begonia – two of the best breakfast and lunch spots in town. Afterward, enjoy a little shopping at a nearby boutique along state street.

Afternoon:

Wander through The Funk Zone, Santa Barbara’s trendy art and wine district. Once a fishing district, it’s now a colorful neighborhood filled with tasting rooms, restaurants, and street art. Try out local tasting rooms like Paradise Springs, Pali Wine Co, or The Society.

If beer’s your thing, grab a pint at The Biergarden. And don’t miss Stearns Wharf for ocean views – you might spot a few seals playing in the waves!

I highly recommend Deep Sea Winery if you’re looking for the more panoramic views of the American Riviera. It’s an incredible spot to soak in the entire atmosphere that Santa Barbara offers.

Evening:

They say that if you were to spend 365 days in Santa Barbara, you would have enough places to experience a new restaurant each day you were here. For a romantic night out, book a table at:

  • Bouchon: Elegant French-Californian cuisine.
  • Loquita: Spanish tapas and sangria.
  • Stonehouse at San Ysidro Ranch: fine dining is a historic garden setting.
  • Zaytoon: Delicious Lebanese food in a twinkle-lit courtyard.

Finish your evening with McConnell’s Ice Cream and a peaceful stroll along the waterfront before heading back to your hotel.

Day 2: Beach Bliss or Wine Country Escape

Morning:

If you’re a beach lover, then start your day at Butterfly Beach in Montecito, or  East Beach along the waterfront on Cabrillo Blvd. Both are perfect for sunbathing, relaxing, and soaking in the views.

One of my personal favorite beach spots in Santa Barbara is East Beach. Include a short walk over to East Beach Tacos – and you’ve just created the best beach day ever.

Afternoon:

Choose your adventure:

Option 1. Head inland to the Santa Ynez Valley for world-class wine tasting (famous for Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay).

Option 2. Spend the afternoon staying local, shopping along State Street’s luxury boutiques or historical landmarks (Santa Barbara Mission, Rose Garden, De La Guerra Plaza).

Option 3. Rent an e-bike and cruise the beachside bike path from Cabrillo Blvd to Butterfly Beach.

Option 4. Continue your day relaxing and lounging in the sand.

If you prefer to stay local, visit the Santa Barbara Courthouse for panoramic views from the clock tower. And every Sunday, the Cabrillo Art Walk showcases local artists selling pottery, wall art, and more.

Evening:

Wrap up your day with a Double Dolphin Sunset Cruise from the harbor, where you can sip local wine as the sun sets behind the Channel Islands.

Day 3: Garden’s, History & Farewell

Morning:

Spend your final morning at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden or Lotusland — both are lush, peaceful escapes. Don’t miss Mission Santa Barbara and its rose garden for a perfect picnic or quiet coffee spot.

Afternoon:

Before heading home, browse local art at the Sunday Art Walk or rent a tandem bike for one last beachside adventure. For a farewell toast, stop at the Rosewood Miramar Beach Bar for a cocktail with an ocean view.

For Couples Who Want to Linger Longer…

If you have 4-5 days, extend your trip with:

  • A spa day at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara.
  • A day trip to Solvang, a Danish-inspired village about 40 minutes away.
  • Horsebacking riding along the coast or through the foothills.

A visit to Santa Cruz Island for kayaking and wildlife spotting.
