What are the best hiking trails in the Pacific Northwest?

The Pacific Northwest is rich with excellent trails, from beginner-friendly to advanced. Some trails stand out for scenery, accessibility, or unforgettable features like waterfalls in Oregon, or the panoramic views of greenery in Washington.

Everywhere you are met with the most colorful shades of green and the freshest surrounding air. Especially during the summer when wildflowers and clear skies surround you; the beauty of this region is abundant.

I’ve been able to explore many parts of this region, often feeling like each destination was better than the last.

When is the Best Time to Go Hiking in the Pacific Northwest?

The ideal time to hike in the Pacific Northwest is late spring through early fall, when snow has mostly melted, the trails are dry, and wildflowers or autumn colors are at their peak.

However, seasons vary depending on elevation and weather, so check trail conditions ahead.

Is Hiking in the Pacific Northwest Safe and What Should I Bring?

Yes – with a little preparation. For hiking in the Pacific Northwest, bring waterproof layers (it can rain even in summer), good footwear, plenty of water and snacks, a map or GPS, and bear spray or awareness of wildlife in the area.

For shoe recommendations, I would always go with Merrell’s Moab 2 Vent Hiking Shoe. Incredibly durable, have lasted me years, and safe for rockier terrain.

Here are my 9 must-visit hikes in the Pacific Northwest:

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

The iconic and well-known national park has a plethora of hiking options.

To begin, start looking into the Skyline Trail and the Wonderland Trail.

Both equally beautiful, the Skyline is much more beginner friendly whereas Wonderland is a total of almost 93 miles.

While you obviously don’t have to go the entire route of Wonderland, it is a strenuous hike with lots of elevation gain and loss.

Mount Rainier is the closest mountain (volcano) to Seattle – Definitely a perfect destination if you are in the area.

Silver Star Mountain, WA

Located on the border between Oregon and Washington State, in Washougal WA, hiking Silver Star Mountain provides breathtaking Pacific Northwest views of all five of the largest cascading peaks in the area.

We did this hike in August, however you can hike the trail any time of the year, including snow season.

In general though, summer is the best time because you want to be able to see all cascades once at the summit (and not have to worry about snow shoes!).

If you are staying in Portland, then this would be a perfect hike to try out.

Silver Star Mountain has been one of the most beautiful, calming yet challenging hikes for me to date.

In addition to our lunch time at the summit we spent a total of 6 hours on this hike, there and back.

Olympic National Park, WA

With its rugged coastline, lush forests, and glacier-capped peaks, Olympic National Park is one of the most stunning national parks in Washington.

The majority of this region is full of lush greenery, dense forests, hiking trails and even a hot spring can be found here.

Hikes like the Hoh River Trail, Hurricane Ridge and the Sol Duc Falls Loop showcase the park’s stunning forest landscapes that aren’t worth missing.

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon/Washington

The Columbia River Gorge is home to numerous hikes including the iconic Multnomah Falls, Eagle Creek and Dog Mountain.

These trails offer stunning waterfalls along with lush green forests and panoramic views of the gorge.

Although I had been warned prior of potential water exposure, I’m afraid I wasn’t expecting it to be true.

But was I wrong!

We were fully immersed, trekking through deep rivers that were incredibly cold for summertime. A slight thrill and panic for each crossing.

And yet we still loved every minute of this surprising experience, shivers and all.

Mount Hood, Oregon

Next is Oregon’s highest peak – Mount Hood.

The Timberline Trail is the most popular hike that navigates through the mountain and to the summit via the South Side Route. This is certainly a great hike for more advanced and experienced hikers wanting a challenge.

Alternatively Mt. Hood has an adventurous community of river surfers.

North Cascades National Park, Washington

Known as the American Alps, North Cascades National Park is home to rugged peaks, pristine lakes, and of course the most beautiful, dense green forests.

Hikes like the Cascade Pass Trail, Maple Pass Loop, and the Blue Lake Trail are some of the best in the area.

The rivers and lakes here are some of the most stunning I’ve ever seen. Incredibly fresh water, clear all the way to the bottom and breathtakingly gorgeous.

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, WA

The Harry’s Ridge Trail and the Loowit Trail offer stunning views of the volcanic crater that make up Mount St. Helens.

Numerous viewpoints and miles of trails have been created for hikers to explore by car and foot.

Over 200 miles of trails allow access to this landscape including gorgeous summer wildflowers, young forests, new lakes, huge mounds of ash and rock and a growing volcanic crater rimmed by the state’s newest glacier.

During the summer, Forest Service guides lead a wide range of activities such as short walks to amphitheater presentations, helping you learn and understand the volcano and its effects over the course of history.

Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, WA

This vast forested area offers numerous hiking opportunities, including the Pacific Crest Trail, Chain Lakes Loop, and Heather-Maple Pass Loop.

The forest has a plethora of outdoor activities. Everything from mountain biking, fishing, camping, horseback riding, hunting and so much more.

Siskiyou Wilderness, Oregon

Last but not least, tucked away in southern Oregon is the Siskiyou Wilderness.

A remote and rugged landscape that’s perfect for the adventurous hiker.

Particularly known for its mountain lakes, Young’s Valley has a beautiful lake that most people frequent.

Secondly, the Panther Ridge Trail and the Siskiyou Crest traverse high alpine terrain with stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.

Along with coastal views, alpine meadows, and lush green forests, this region has something for every hiker.

It should be noted to always check trail conditions, weather forecasts, and any necessary permits before embarking on your adventure.
