Enjoy the Fall Colors in Central Park

If there’s one thing you absolutely must do during fall in New York City, it’s a walk through Central Park.

Peak fall foliage usually happens between late October and early November, and it’s breathtaking. You feel like you’re walking in a movie, which makes sense being that many classic movies have been filmed here during this season.

Start at The Mall and Literary Walk, where golden leaves create a canopy overhead, then head to Bow Bridge and Bethesda Terrace for those Instagram worthy views.

Rent a bike if you’re feeling active, or grab a hot cider from a nearby vendor and wander around. If you’re there on a Sunday, you might even catch a local musician filling the park with jazz or violin melodies — a small but unforgettable NYC moment.

Explore the Metropolitan Museum of Art

If the weather turns chilly (or rainy), the Met is a perfect indoor escape.

It’s one of the largest and most iconic museums in the world, and wandering through its galleries feels like a cultural exploration in itself.

I’ve spent hours wandering through the various halls, discovering ancient Egyptian architecture, roman sculptures and so so so much more. I wasn’t able to get to everything, and I can’t wait for my next trip back to NYC, because this was a top favorite of ours.

  • Don’t miss: The rooftop garden (open through late fall) with sweeping views of Central Park’s fall colors. From the top, you’ll get one of the most beautiful views of Central Park.

  • Tip: Give yourself at least 2–3 hours, though you could easily spend an entire day here.

Other Fall Activities You’ll Love in NYC

There really are endless things to do in NYC, but those cozy moments and city adventures are what we’re really after once the weather changes.

  • Take a Hudson River Cruise – see the skyline surrounded by fall foliage from the water.
  • Visit Bryant Park’s Winter Village – Usually opening in late October, this charming market has ice skating, holiday shops, and hot chocolate and chai latte stands.
  • Explore the High Line – A stroll above the city lined with plants that turn brilliant shades of gold and crimson in the fall.
  • Catch a Broadway Show – Fall evenings are perfect for dinner and a show.
  • Go to a Rooftop Bar at Sunset – Try 230 Fifth or Westlight in Brooklyn for incredible skyline views and a cozy cocktail.

What to Wear & Pack for Fall in NYC

The key to surviving NYC in the fall is layers. Weather can change quickly – from beautiful crisp mornings to mild afternoons followed by potential breezy nights, you’re never certain what the weather might bring.

Here are some essential packing items to bring:

  • Bring a medium-weight jacket or trench coat.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are necessary; my favorite are thick sneakers.
  • Accessories: a scarf, umbrella (you can get one from your hotel), and crossbody bag.
  • Camera or smartphone with lots of storage – yes, you’ll take that many Central Park photos.

Pro Travel & Navigation Tips

  • Subway > Taxis.
    • The subway is faster and cheaper. Get a MetroCard or use tap-to-pay with your phone.
  • Google Maps is your best friend.
    • It works well for both walking and subway route. But make sure you have enough phone power for the day. Consider bringing an external charger with you.
  • Crowds are inevitable.
    • Be patient, especially around Times Square and Fifth Avenue.
  • Stay central if possible.
    • Midtown, Chelsea, or the Upper West Side make it easier to get everywhere by subway.

For many travelers – yes! The weather is mild but the turning of the season and the cool air is a perfect match with the warm city life and cup of coffee.

Many would argue that October and early November are the sweet spot before winter sets in.

Crowds during this time of year can be a con to the fall season, however there’s no question in my mind that it’s worth it.
