Lakefront House at Lake Almanor: The Best Way to Experience Everything

There’s something undeniably perfect about waking up to the gentle sounds of water lapping at the shore, a soft breeze through the tall pines, and the morning light glittering across a vast alpine lake of Lake Almanor.

Staying at a lake house has to be one of the most memorable experiences you can share with close family and friends. Time gathered together for sunrise paddles, midday swims and boating, and evenings around a fire pit watching the stars: all collectively leaving you with a full heart and a stronger understanding of what it means to be grateful.

That’s the experience of staying at a lakefront house in Lake Almanor, California – one of the state’s most underrated summer destinations.

Sitting at the base of Lassen Volcanic National Park, with over 52 square miles of fresh water and more than 45 miles of shoreline, Lake Almanor offers the perfect setting for both adventurous lake activities and relaxation.

Life on the Lakefront

When you choose to rent a lakefront property, your mornings start with coffee on the deck, overlooking glassy water and the occasional early-morning water skiers passing by.

Followed by a few “friendly” geese passing through each lawn of every property, the cries of an osprey and her nest above you, and on rare occasion, you might witness fresh water otters eating their crawfish finds on the docks.

As quiet and calm as the mornings may feel, nature timely wakes up and moves at a fast pace here.

Mid-mornings are all about getting on the water and making the most of the calm environment before the wind picks up around 2pm.

Most people on the lake choose to wake surf, tube and jet ski. During the week the lake is often empty however weekends get more crowded. I recommend staying at a lake house for an entire week to get all the benefits of being out on the water.

Afternoons call for lazy swims, paddle boarding sessions, or simply laying out on the dock with your toes in the cool, refreshing waters.

The water here is incredibly clean, sometimes on the colder side (snow runoff) and clear enough to see the bottom.

It’s not as crystal-blue as Tahoe, being that Tahoe’s waters are exceptionally cold. Lake Almanor is known for its deep-blue color combined with warmer weather, heating the top layer of the water just enough for a perfect mid-day dip.

Evenings bring spectacular sunsets that paint the sky in shades of soft pink and orange, best enjoyed on a family booze cruise and a glass of wine.

And don’t forget to hop onto the dock later in the evening for an epic star-gazing discovery, looking at the endless shooting stars and the plethora of satellites. The milky way is incredibly clear here – one of the best star-gazing spots I’ve been to.

The Summer Environment

Summertime at Lake Almanor means long, sunny days with warm air and cool nights. The natural setting is simply breathtaking.

Towering evergreens frame the shoreline, Mount Lassen stands tall in the distance, and the abundant wildlife – from soaring ospreys, to grazing deer, to the occasional Bald Eagle and river otter – it all reminds you that nature is literally everywhere.

On occasion, summer storms do pass by here with subtle rains and thunder storms. Although not a common occurrence, keep track of the hourly weather if you’ll be out boating on the water.

Water Sports and Lake Life

One of the biggest perks of being lakefront is easy access to water sports.

Unlike a resort or campground where you might have to pack up and drive to the water, here you step right outside and onto your own personal dock.

Paddle boarding, kayaking, and jet skiing are some of the more common activities, while boating adventures include wakeboarding, tubing, water skiing, and wake surfing.

The water quality at Lake Almanor is crisp, clean, and refreshing – perfect for summing on hot summer afternoons.

*Average summer water temperature is 60°F to 70°F.

Why a Lakefront House is the Best Choice

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Lake Almanor, from rustic cabins to camping beneath the stars. Resorts offer convenience and structure, but nothing beats the freedom and comfort of a lakefront rental home.

A house gives you the space to gather with family, cook meals together, and unwind together without worrying about schedules.

You get the privacy of having your own dock – something you won’t find at a campground or standard hotel.

Plus not to mention the private “beach” you get along your coast, usually covered by the greenery of pine trees that offers extra privacy.
